Toponymy

A first mention as Sancis goes back to the year 1096 in the cartularies of the monastery of Saint-Marcel near Chalon-sur-Saône . Further documents name the place in 1157 Cincinum and 1184 Senciacum . The name possibly goes back to a settlement of the Senones who settled along the Roman road between Saint-Germain-du-Bois and Villevieux . It was not until 1953 that the place received the addition of sur-Seille , before it was only called Sens or Sains .

history

A Roman road led from the bridge at the hamlet of L'Estalet to Villevieux and crossed Sens, which is located on a hill above the Seille. In the 13th century the rule of Visargent passed from the Vienne to the de Brancion family , who already built the first mill (mentioned in 1550), which in 1856 had eleven millstones . The Castle of Visargent was built in the 17th and 18th centuries, but largely burned down in the 19th century. The brick church, against a tower with a spiral staircase, was built in the 16th century, the tower was rebuilt in 1825 and replaced by a tower in the style of Franche-Comté . It was consecrated to Saint Germanus. The hamlet of Condé experienced a number of changes of hands, in 1517 it was acquired by the Bouton family, whose male branch died out in 1603, as a result of which rule passed to the Saint-Mauris . The rule belonged to the du Châtel family in the 17th century , then the de la Rodde , the de Brancion in the 18th century and finally the de Scorailles . Castle, market hall, wine press and brickworks have disappeared today. In the 18th century, the mill at Sens had a fulling mill , was renovated in 1825 and had eight millstones. It partially burned down in 1961 and ceased operations in 1976. In 1794 a nitric boiler is mentioned. The rectory was built shortly before the revolution , and Sens was the canton capital from 1790 to 1802. The D23 was expanded in 1840, the Mairie boys' school was built in 1880 and a memorial was erected in 1891 in favor of Capitaine Michelin , who was killed in the war against the Prussians in 1870. In 1869 110 of the 167 houses were thatched and 33 farms were counted. In 1930 there was still a brick factory, today the kiln and parts of the drying rooms are missing.
