Toponymy

The place appears for the first time around 1131, in connection with the establishment of the Miroir monastery , as Abbatis quae Miratorium dicitur ... (German: The monastery, which is called "that to be admired"). It was only later that today's community emerged, which allowed the monastery name to live on.

history

In 1131, Humbert de Coligny donated land and forest for the foundation of the monastery, along with other lands in Gizia , where the monastery brothers planted a vineyard. The founder is buried in the church, as are other benefactors of the monastery. The parish was in the Sagy castellan area and the monastery had to deliver 10 pounds of wax a year in exchange for the protection it received.

The monastery Le Miroir was very prosperous, but was badly affected by the wars of religion . At the end of the Ancien Régime it was only a priory , but could keep its jurisdictions and sovereign rights. Dom Fortuné Bouchard was the last prior, there were only a few monks left in the monastery who paused to collect a heavily reduced tithe. The kitchen and cellar seemed to have been well-maintained, at least a lot better than the library with its dusty tomes. During the revolution , the monastery was almost completely destroyed, today only the church remains, the nave of which was shortened by a third.

When the departments were reorganized in 1790, it was forgotten to add the hamlets of Beffoux and Crotenots to the Saône-et-Loire department, as they belonged to the Cuisia parish in the Jura. It was not until year V of the revolutionary calendar (1796/1797) that they were added to the municipality of Le Miroir.
