The Miroir Monastery (Miratorium, Le Miroir) is a former Cistercian abbey in the commune of Le Miroir in the Saône-et-Loire department , Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region , in France , around 14 km southeast of Louhans and 23 km southwest of Lons- le-Saunier .

history

The monastery was donated by Humbert de Coligny in 1131 and occupied by Cistercians from the Cîteaux monastery . The establishment led to a conflict with the Cluniac priory Gigny and the Abbey of Miroir over the tithe for the land acquired by Le Miroir in the Grangie Gizia. The conflict was carried to the Holy See by Petrus Venerabilis and Bernhard von Clairvaux , and after Bernhard's death it was decided in favor of Gigny. In addition, the monastery owned the Grangie le Bouchat in Varennes-Saint-Sauveur around 10 km in the southwest. In the 16th century, the monastery fell into Kommende . In 1612 (or 1619) the monastery was merged with the mother abbey of Cîteaux. Except for the church, the monastery buildings were destroyed during the French Revolution .

The medieval monastery church, which was later reduced to a quarter of its original size, has been preserved with a transept, two rectangular chapels on the northern transept arm, a rectangular closed main choir, two central nave bays and a roof turret over the crossing as a parish church. A small outbuilding is attached to the southern arm of the transept.
