Toponymy

Labergement is first mentioned in 1376, a hundred years later the name Labergement lez Cuiserey appears. It is understandable that this spelling is simply an assimilation of the article with the noun. The term Abergement remains controversial . An obvious would be to connect to the Auberge , with just related to the Old High German derivation of heritable berga and the associated end, our accommodation an army Abergement might be quite inappropriate.

On the other hand, it can be considered likely that the term ' overage' (which incidentally occurs mainly in the departments of Jura and Saône-et-Loire ) is related to deforestation agreements. From the 13th century onwards, clearing was given a new status, for the growing population it was necessary to gain new cultivated areas, the existing areas were no longer sufficient for food. With the Abergement a new form of contract arose in the Middle Ages, an agreement between feudal lords who did not have the same rank but the same intention. For example, a lord made an area of his rule available to a spiritual lord, who provided the clearing staff (usually monks). The secular Lord made a one-off or recurring payment and very often made a commitment to build a church. Once the clearing was completed, the Lord could specifically colonize the newly won area, make it arable and have the church built. The advantages of this collaboration were obvious:

  • for the spiritual master
    • Strengthening his position through the increase in the number of believers
    • Strengthening its position by building more churches
    • financial return for his diocese and the upkeep of the monasteries and their inhabitants
  • for the worldly Lord
    • targeted expansion of the settlement area
    • Strengthening its reputation through a growing population and new settlements
    • Strengthening the welfare of its people through increasing arable land
    • Strengthening the salvation of the soul as a result of the foundation of a church on the new area

Due to the specific location, it is quite conceivable that the abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Tournus made such an agreement with the castellan of Cuisery , since clearing this area was certainly a worthwhile goal for both parties, especially for the castellan , who in this way the western slope could additionally secure against the Saône . It should be noted that the northern areas of Ormes and Simandre no longer belonged to the castellany Cuisery , so that L'Abergement formed a welcome forward post for the castellan .

history

L'Abergement-de-Cuisery is located on an old road from Tournus to the Roman road from Chalon-sur-Saône to Bourg-en-Bresse (roughly equivalent to today's D44). Henri de Bagé took over Cuisery and its surroundings in 1220 from Hugues IV , Duke of Burgundy, as a fief. Through the marriage of Sybille de Bagé as the only daughter of Guy de Bagé († 1248), the rule came in 1272 to Amé V , Count of Savoy. In 1289 he exchanged lands with Robert II , Duke of Burgundy, making L'Abergement de Cuisery again Burgundian with the domain of the Lords of Bagé . After this exchange, today's municipal area with its settlement was created. In 1281 Froidière still appears as the property of the parish of Préty and the areas remain separate until the 17th century. In 1443 the area belongs to the Dukes of Burgundy , but the Abbot of Tournus is still entitled to tithe. The apse of the current church is a remnant of the 15th century chapel, which was dedicated to Saint Christopher . The nave presumably dates from the 18th century, the bell tower was finished in 1833. In Gâte-Pain there was a mill and a wash house that were destroyed between 1950 and 1970. The houses of Champ-de-l'Escalier have completely disappeared because the area is very vulnerable to flooding . In Fraigne there was a farm belonging to the Tournus hospital, which was sold in 1930. The millstone worked until 1950, powered by the étang , later by a spring and since 1930 by a motor. The water wheel still appears to be there. The mill at Étang de la Bonde was in operation until 1920 or 1930 and then became a dairy from 1920 to 1970. The Richy mill was sold shortly after it was built and was owned by Janin . It was driven by an étang that has largely silted up today. Later it was powered by steam, then by a gas engine and in 1940 by a diesel engine. Today around 4 tons are produced annually, previously it was 100 thanks to the 3 pairs of millstones. Hemp used to be grown and sold to Tournus . The Maison Michaud was formerly the Café Perret-Janin , ended the operation 1940th There was a forge in Mare until 1980, and there was also a wash house. In 1856 there were 6 mills and 3 oil mills, and in 1988 there were 22 farms.
