Toponymy

Ratenelle is first mentioned in the 14th century in connection with a Peroninus de Ratenella, alias de Ratanello . The port of Ratenelle is mentioned as early as 1314. The origin of the name is uncertain, in the Middle Ages the place had three hay racks in the coat of arms, so it was believed that the place name goes back to this device (French: râteau). More probable, however, is the origin of ratis (Latin: bracken), although there is no evidence of the source.

history

In Gallo-Roman times the area was only sparsely populated, in the Middle Ages two villages emerged close to each other. However, they were independent of each other, one belonging to the Cuisery castellan , the other to the prior of the Benedictine Abbey of Ambronay . In 1306 the upper village had 62 families and was owned by Amadeus V of Savoy . In the lower village , the prior resided in a heavily fortified residence above the Seille . As the holder of spiritual and secular power, he is the master of the village and collects interest and taxes from around 35 families. The inhabitants of this village belonged to the priory, while those from above belonged to the Bernhardskirche. So both villages had their church, their cemetery, their pastor. However, since the St. Bernard Church was subordinate to the prior, they ultimately formed a common parish, which was subordinate to the diocese of Chalon-sur-Saône . This connection ended with the revolution that united both villages and made Ratenelle one municipality. However, there were no traces left of the Bernhardskirche or the cemetery. Today's church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.
