Toponymy

The first mention of the place goes back to the year 926, Cœnobium Æthicens can be found in the library of the Cluny Abbey , in 1089 the monastery Sancti-Eugendi Etice is mentioned there. Finally, in 1275, the Prior Monasterii in Brissia , the head of the monastery in Bresse, is named. From this name, the place name Mouthier-en-Bresse was formed over time. The saint to whom the church was consecrated was Eugendus.

history

The name goes back to a Benedictine monastery that was built in the 10th century and was named Monasterium in Brixia . This name was later transferred to the parish and ultimately to the community. Little is known about the monastery, the archives were probably destroyed during the countless wars in the Burgundian- Liberal border area. The foundation is likely to go back to Bernon , who later became the first abbot of the Cluny monastery , who was supported by the lords of Bellevesvre . In any case, the monastery is mentioned in Bernon's will, who arranged his succession for his abbeys and appointed his nephew Widon for Cœnobium Æthicense (Mouthier-en-Bresse). In various documents from the 11th and 12th centuries, Mouthier is mentioned as a branch of the Baume monastery . The monastery was destroyed during the revolution and there are no more traces. For centuries, the residents of the place suffered from the taxes and the consequences of the hand of the dead . Due to the inalienable nature of the goods that had been given to the Church, the self-employed could not acquire property.

In 1789 Mouthier was divided into two parishes by the Brenne, Mouthier south and Dissey north, both belonging to the bailiwick Chalon-sur-Saône and ecclesiastically dependent on Auxonne . The church is dedicated to Saint Vitus, belonged to the diocese of Besançon , to the deanery of Neublans and was under the collature of the Baume-les-Messieurs monastery, it was built in the 18th century next to the monastery church. It was customary to roll sick children over the Vitus Stone so that they could get well again. In 1889 the hamlet of Chouillère received its own schoolhouse, until then the children were taught in the hamlet's houses. The girls 'school in Mouthier existed until 1965, the boys' school became Mairie . In 1988 there were 61 farms.

In Mouthier there were two castles , that of Dissey , which was in the area of le Colombier , and that of Events , of which there are no longer any traces. In the hamlet of Rond , directly east of Bellevesvre , there was a moth that was used several times by the Spanish Habsburgs to lead their attacks on Bellevesvre .

After the House of Burgundy died out in the male line in 1477, the Duchy of Burgundy went to France, but Franche-Comté to the Burgundian Empire . The wars in the 16th and 17th centuries (the war against the Savoyard Duke Charles Emanuel I , the Thirty Years War and the War of Devolution ) brought terrible disasters to the place on the outermost border point of the Duchy of Burgundy.
