Toponymy

Saviniangas is mentioned for the first time as early as 885 , in 960 the books of the Saint-Marcel monastery refer to: Capella sita in comitatu Lugdunensi, in Villa Saviniaco, dicita in honore beate Dei genitricis Marie (German: The chapel in the county of Louhans, near the house des Saviniacus, consecrated to the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God). This chapel was enlarged to the present day church in the 12th century, the chapel forms the present choir. From the mention of a Savinius we can conclude that the place was already settled in Gallo-Roman times and eventually led to the place name Savigny . The addition -sur-Seille has been guaranteed since 1366.

history

The place is located on a hill above the Seille, noteworthy is the fact that there are no buildings south of the place up to the Seille over 500 to 800 meters. An old Roman road leads through the La Renardière forest from Les Pilloux to Copin . In 1289 the Count of Savoy sold his castles and lands in Cuisery , Sagy and Savigny to Duke Robert II of Burgundy. The Donjon of Thiellay has been mentioned since 1270, the associated castle, of which remains are still visible, was built by the de Vienne family . A port in Thiellay is mentioned in 1503 , at that time a ferry was operated, which was still in operation in 1910. Thiellay was a separate fiefdom owned by the de la Curne family for more than a century , who lived in the castle until 1720. After that it belonged to the Marquis de Bourbonne , who got the fief of la Michaudière through marriage in 1748 . Two Maires of Louhans and Magistrates in Dijon and Paris were born from a de la Michaudière family . The remaining areas of Savigny belonged to the Counts of Branges .

In 1838 iron ore was mined in Savigny and barrel hoops were made. One of the last two knife manufacturers in Bresse worked in Savigny. The first Mairie school was built in 1846, the rectory in 1872, the church was expanded in 1883, a school for girls was built in 1902 and a new boys' school in 1904. A mill in Deschezeau existed on the Serrée until the 1960s . In 1988 there were 39 farms

The community is located in a very sensitive area, as the tributaries of the Seille drain large stretches of the Jura foot. The following natural disasters are noted recently:

  • Storm damage from November 6-10, 1982
  • Floods and debris flows from December 8th to 31st, 1982
  • Floods and debris flows from May 12-13, 1983
  • Floods and debris flows from October 24-26, 1999
  • Earthmoving as a result of the drought and subsequent water balance from July 1 to September 30, 2003

heraldry

The municipality uses a coat of arms for its official paper that goes back to the La Michaudière family , the former lords of Savigny. Blazon : a golden bar in blue, covered with a walking black greyhound with a red collar . The hamlet of Michaudière also has a coat of arms, but it contains a running greyhound, while the municipality emblazoned a walking greyhound.
