Toponymy

Romenay is mentioned for the first time in the books of Cluny around 950 as In pago Lucdunensi, in agro Romanaco , i.e. in the district of Louhans, in the area of Romanacus there is said to have been a church in honor of Saint Benedict . It is conceivable that the area once belonged to a Romanus , which changed to Gallo-Roman Romanacum, as the name for what belongs to the Romanus. The current place name Romenay has been guaranteed since 1504 .

history

The Merovingian King Guntram I donated his lands near Romenay to the Bishop of Mâcon . This sealed the fate of the city; it belonged to episcopal rule until the revolution . Due to its location, however, it was often exposed to the desires of the Counts of Savoy to conquer . Parts of the former city wall are still visible today, two city gates and a rectangular tower from the 14th century are still in excellent condition.

The church was repeatedly looted and damaged during the religious wars. It was therefore just as often repaired and changed. A beautiful Romanesque portal made of pink stone from Préty has been preserved . The choir and chapels date from the 13th, the other chapels from the 14th and 15th centuries, the nave was rebuilt in the 17th century. The bell tower was destroyed during the Revolution and rebuilt in 1866, it bears the inscription: Renversé par quelques uns en 1793 - Relevé par tous en 1866 (destroyed by some in 1793, rebuilt by everyone in 1866).

heraldry

The community needs the coat of arms, which goes back to the bishops of Mâcon , who were also barons of Romenay. Blazon: a golden sloping bar in blue . According to other sources, the sloping beam is emblazoned in silver, and the upper coat of arms is also discussed.
