Toponymy

A first mention goes back to the year 1074 in connection with a Stephanus de Judeis . In 1284 the place is called Juys and in 1362 Joye . There is no evidence that the name of the place has any connection with Jews or with Jewish residents. However, the derivation of Iugum (Latin: yoke) is also inconclusive. It is probable that in connection with the Latinization of the name of the aforementioned Stephanus, the form Judeis arose, which no longer allows a return to the original.

history

In 1289 the Count of Savoy sold his castles and lands in Cuisery , Sagy and Savigny-sur-Seille to Duke Robert II of Burgundy, on which occasion Juif came to Burgundy and the Barony of Branges . In 1655 the barony was elevated to a marquisate in favor of Antoine Barillon de Morangis , member and maître des requêtes of the royal council . The marquisate later passed to Tardieu de Malessis . Until 1665 Juif was a district of Montret , on which the church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew was built , it was enlarged in the 19th century. In the first half of the 19th century, the Château des Barons was built in Juif, the girls' school in 1860 and the Château des Carré in Charmoy in 1880 . In 1906 a new multi-class school building and the Mairie were built . At the end of the 19th century, tobacco was grown and chair makers were active. Although the forest had decreased, there were still significant stocks of oak forests. At the end of the 20th century, a sizable corn drying plant was built in Charmoy . In 1988 there were still 33 farms.
