Toponymy

The place appears for the first time in 870 as Brogalia villa , in 1225 a church is also mentioned Ecclesia Bruelli . 926 is mentioned in Curcellis (Courcelles) and in Culecis (Culay). The area seems to have been settled quite early. The name of the place Brogalia seems to go back to the Gallo-Romanic language , where brueille meant forest, scrub and scrub.

history

Bruailles is on the Roman road Louhans - Frontenaud , as are the other two hamlets mentioned in the first millennium. The fiefs in the area of Bruailles belonged to the sovereignty of the lords of Sainte-Croix , with the exception of Chichevière , which belonged to the Gigny monastery and jurisdiction was with Louhans . In today's municipality there were several castles and fiefs. Marcilly, Bruailles and Montagny belonged to the rule of Antoine de Bretagne in the 17th century and then passed to François de Thoisy , who was also lord of Joudes . Chardenoux belonged to the lords of Puget and Patran of the d'Épernay family in the 18th century . In 1845 it was reported that the church of Bruailles was devoid of any art-historical interest - and that it was too small. In 1849 the choir was obviously enlarged, but on June 17, 1879 the church was partially destroyed by fire. The church was rebuilt from 1883 to 1885. Although the old bricks could still have been used, the decision was made to build a building made of ashlar . The church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.
