Toponymy

Courtépée mentions the place as A Fago (lat: near the beech), the occurrence of which is probably eponymous. Le Fay is mentioned as early as 1190 in the deed books of Baume-les-Messieurs .

history

Le Fay is first mentioned in 1075 in connection with a Hugo de Fay , in the middle of the 14th century Jean du Fay is buried in the Abbey of Le Miroir . Through the marriage of Marguerite du Fay , his only daughter, with Philippe Bouton , the estate came into their possession in 1358. Jean Bouton donated the chapel of Le Fay and was buried there in 1436. Like many of his ancestors, he was Castellan of Sagy. This was also his son Jacques, father of Émart Bouton, who in turn was advisor and chamberlain to Duke Philip the Good and Charles the Bold , and later to King Louis XI. le prudent . The castle of Fay, which was the seat of the boutons and other nobles, had eleven towers and was heavily fortified. It is said that there was a walk from the castle to the chapel. In addition, it would have had Oublietten (from French: oublier = to forget), i.e. dungeons in which those sentenced for life were forgotten . There were also wells and holes in the basement, in which one could get rid of unloved people without being noticed. The castle had already been destroyed by Courtépée . On the other hand, he mentions that the municipality was extraordinarily wooded, there were four mills and when the Étang des Claies was drained in 1760, the remains of a Roman road were discovered that apparently led from Châteaurenaud via Savigny-en-Revermont to Montmorot . The church is consecrated to St. Christopher and dates from 1525, it was supplemented with side chapels and choir in 1864.

heraldry

The municipality uses the coat of arms, which goes back to the Bouton family . Members of a branch of the family, the Bouton de Fay , were the lords of Le Fay from the 14th to the 18th century. Apparently the family died out, so the community is allowed to use the coat of arms. Blazon: a golden bar in red .
