course
At 3:03 pm the "Köln", a Heinkel He 111 C of Deutsche Lufthansa , took off from Berlin with destination Mannheim . At about 4:04 pm, the "Köln" reported an altitude of 1,400 meters. At 4:20 p.m. near Schweinfurt , the pilots in Mannheim requested a first radio bearing . The last radio direction finding was carried out with the "Köln" at around 16:53. At around 4:57 p.m., the He 111 collided with the northeast slope of the White Stone at a height of around 450 meters . Ten of the twelve inmates died, the survivors sat in the last row of seats. It was the worst airplane accident with an He 111.
Cause of accident
No errors were found during the inspection of the aircraft. The crash site was off course. The radio bearings carried out in Mannheim were also too imprecise. It is most likely that the pilots believed they were in the depression between the Melibokus and the White Stone when they began the descent. Due to the poor visibility, they did not see that they were flying directly towards the 548 meter high White Stone.
