The Confederation Square (French .: Place de la Conféderation dt Translation:. Place the Confederation ) is a place in Ottawa . It is located in the Centretown district in the immediate vicinity of the parliament building . As the location of the National War Memorial , Confederation Square is regularly used for official events. The entire facility has been classified as a National Historic Site since 1984 .
Location and description
The square, laid out in the shape of a triangle , connects the northeast end of Wellington Street (French: Rue Wellington ) with Elgin Street and Rideau Street . In addition, Sparks Street joins the square from the southwest. The ceremonial ring route Confederation Avenue runs across the square. To the north are the Ottawa Locks and the Château Laurier , to the east the Rideau Canal and the Government Conference Center (the former main train station ), to the southeast the National Arts Center , to the southwest the Hotel Lord Elgin , to the west the Central Chambers building and the Langevin Block and to the northwest the parliament hill .

The square was laid out in 1869.
In 1939 the National War Memorial was opened. Since then, the square has been the center of Remembrance Day celebrations .
traffic
Placed at the intersection of major streets, Confederation Square is an important traffic junction. It forms the main intersection between the districts of Centretown and Lowertown, which are connected via the immediately adjacent Plaza Bridge .
Numerous OC Transpo bus routes serve several stops on the west, south-west and east sides of the square. A Confederation Line tram tunnel is currently being built below the square .
