Toponymy

A first mention goes back to the year 1180, Jean-Jacques Guillemin mentions Viriacus , a settlement that belonged to a Virius and became Viriacus with the possessive suffix in Gallo-Roman times . Later Véricié is mentioned, and in particular Ecclesia de Viresseyo . This development allows the conclusion that the current place name was the property of a first Gallo-Roman landlord. This is supported by the assumption that a Roman road ran through the municipality that connected Seurre with Cuisery .

history

Vérissey was a fiefdom that belonged to the Lessard domain and belonged to the Venot de Montcenis family in the 17th and 18th centuries . There was a stately castle in Noisy , the rectangular moats are still visible in old cadastral plans. In 1830 it was finally destroyed. There was a castle in Vernotte that was built at the beginning of the 18th century and demolished in 1978. The hamlet of Fourneaux takes its name from the charcoal burners who worked there and there was a brickworks near Noisy . In Gerbeaux there was a chapel dedicated to Saint Roch and destroyed in 1791. One church belonged to the chapter of Saint-Vincent de Mâcon , was dedicated to Saint Eligius and was demolished in 1848. In 1863 a (church) parish hall was built in its place. At the beginning of the 20th century, only four craftsmen and business people settled in the community, one ran a spa, another a café , which was closed in 1958. In 1988 there were still 11 farms.
