Gerda Viecenz (born March 29, 1944 ; † November 13, 2005 in Leipzig ) was a supporter of the fine arts and a highly committed citizen. Most recently she lived in Leipzig and dedicated her life to promoting the visual arts .

Life

In the 1970s she worked in the Leipzig office of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR . At that time she not only campaigned for artists who were officially tolerated and sponsored, but also for those persecuted by the State Security ( Stasi ). Her political commitment resulted in her participation in the Leipzig Monday Demonstration in 1989 and the co-founding of the Leipzig Round Table and the New Forum .

Since 1990 she took over the management of the Association of Visual Artists Leipzig , in the same year she was largely responsible for the establishment of the Saxon Artists Association, whose management she later also took over. It offered young and old artists, well-known and unknown alike, an exhibition and sales forum with its art department store, which is well known throughout Germany. In Schkeuditz she founded the socio-cultural center art Kapella . She made a political commitment to Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , ran several times for the Saxon state parliament and from 1998 until her death was spokeswoman for the Federal Working Group on Culture of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. As a board member of the Ver.di union in Saxony, she was also responsible for the cultural sector there. In January 2004 she received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for her civic engagement .
