Edmund Anthony Cutlar Purdom (born December 19, 1924 in Welwyn Garden City , Hertfordshire , England , † January 1, 2009 in Rome , Italy ) was a British actor and voice actor .

Life

Purdom was raised by Jesuits at St. Ignatius College and by Benedictines before beginning his film career . Enthusiastic about the theater at an early age, he began his acting career in 1945 in plays by William Shakespeare and Molière . Due to his good looks Hollywood producers were aware of him, and Purdom was through his work mainly in historical films Hollywood shear stamping temporarily to a heartthrob. He had his most important role as the main actor in the historical monumental film Sinuhe the Egyptians by Michael Curtiz , in which he replaced Marlon Brando , who had temporarily withdrawn from the project. Both MGM and 20th Century Fox gave him a contract.

After his career in Hollywood had stalled, he shifted his focus of work back to Europe from 1957, where he was seen in numerous genre productions , including sandal films mainly produced in Italy , later in spaghetti westerns and then in horror films . The quality of his films often left a lot to be desired.

Purdom was married four times and divorced three times. His first wife, Anita Philips, is the mother of his children. It was followed by Linda Christian , the ex-wife of actor Tyrone Power ; his third wife was Alicia Darr. In 2000 he married Vivienne Purdom.

Purdom last lived in Rome. In Italy he appeared in around 60 B-films produced there and for many years he was a spokesperson for the English dubbing of Italian films. He also worked as a film producer.
