Buccaneers of the Seas (original title: Il corsaro nero ) is a comedy from 1971. Terence Hill and Bud Spencer can be seen in the leading roles . What is unusual about this film is that most of the time this well-known team does not act with each other, but against each other.

action

Captain Blackie is a notorious pirate who wants to acquire a shipload of the Spanish gold . When he meets Don Pedro, he devises a plan to find this ship with his gold treasure. His rival is the viceroy of the Spanish colonies.

He travels to Tortuga , a pirate stronghold where three other pirate captains - Montbarque, DeLussac and Skull - are located. These three each have different plans for what to do with the gold. Montbarque sells two prisoners from his hostage situation on a Spanish frigate . Don Pedro recognizes the Viceroy's wife in one of the prisoners and Blackie buys her. But Skull knows this too. He's also trying to do the deal. When Blackie refuses to do business with Skull, he turns the other two pirate captains against Blackie. These set a trap for him. Blackie manages to escape and flee to San Luis with the other three pirates from his crew. There he discovers a secret about gold. When Blackie returns to his ship, the three other pirate captains have already hijacked the ship and detained the remaining crew. They have made every effort to implement their plan. Skull gives the prisoners a choice. They either make the deal with him or they are tortured.

Blackie manages to free his team. In doing so he loses the "Fury", his ship. Now Skull is his prisoner and he uses Skull's ship, the "Erebus", to get the gold. During this maneuver, the Erebus is badly damaged and Skull, who insists on piloting his ship on its final voyage, is killed.

For this purpose, a Spanish frigate is boarded. The pirates win the battle. In the finale, the Viceroy dies fighting Blackie. In order to save the gold for the Spanish crown after all, the wife of the viceroy Blackie tries to advertise with tempting offers and titles. Blackie finally reveals to her that he has procured the gold for the English crown.

criticism

The film service said that the “fragile storyline” had “no other function than to poorly connect the brawls on the ground floor and the duel duels on a higher level”. It is true that attempts have been made to achieve “a parodic effect every now and then”, but amusement “occurs more where it was not intended”. In conclusion it is said that the film is a "[s] template-like pirate spectacle without a level, but with numerous fights".
