The sinking of the Titanic (Original title: Titanic ) is an American drama film directed by Jean Negulesco from 1953 with Clifton Webb , Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Wagner in the leading roles. The film tells of the sinking of the British luxury liner RMS Titanic on April 15, 1912. However, the focus is on the story of the marital problems of the fictional Sturges family.

action

Julia Sturges, whose marriage has not been true for a long time, wants to leave her husband Richard. That's why she embarks with her daughter Annette and her son Norman on the Titanic, whose maiden voyage to New York City is imminent. Richard can follow her and at the last minute buy a ticket for the Titanic from a poor family of emigrants. Although Julia and Richard try to play down their marital problems in front of the children during the voyage, the situation escalates more and more. Annette falls improperly in love with Gifford Rogers, who comes from a poor background and who is courting her. Richard has to find out that Norman, who is his whole pride, is not his birth son, but comes from an extramarital relationship with Juliet. He feels hurt in his honor and lets the boy feel it too. The family is put to the test when the Titanic rams an iceberg and is doomed. Julia, Annette and Norman manage to get a place in one of the rare lifeboats. Richard, like all men, has to stay on board and waits on deck for the end. But out of love for his supposed father, Norman leaves the lifeboat unnoticed at the last second to go down with him and the ship "like a man".

background

The sinking of the Titanic was originally supposed to be filmed in 1940 under the direction of Alfred Hitchcock . The project was not realized, however, because Hitchcock showed little interest in a film with a foreseeable outcome. In 1940 he turned Rebecca and his producer David O. Selznick , who had already secured the rights for this film title, dedicated himself and his funds to one in 1939 Big topic: Gone with the wind . The film was not shot until 1953, but Jean Negulesco took over the direction.

A 6.5-meter-long model of the Titanic was used for the trick shots of the film .

criticism

“Melodramatic film about the spectacular sinking of the British ship Titanic, considered unsinkable, which collided with an iceberg on a record voyage across the Atlantic in 1912. He mainly focuses on the personal fates and tragedies of some passengers and crew. Recognizable as a solidly staged psychological drama - not an early disaster film. "

Awards

The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Production Design in 1954, and ultimately received the Gold Statue for Best Original Screenplay .
