Frances Bergen (born September 14, 1922 in Birmingham , Alabama , † October 2, 2006 in Los Angeles , California ; born Frances Westerman ) was an American actress and model . She was the wife of ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and the mother of actress Candice Bergen and her brother Kris.

Life

Bergen was born in Birmingham , Alabama to William and Lillie Mae Westerman. When she came to New York City , she became a successful model for the Powers agency. She was the Chesterfield Girl and the Ipana Girl in magazines and was known as Frances Westcott during that time .

Frances Westerman met Edgar Bergen at the age of 19 while on one of his radio programs. He was two decades older than she was, but the two married on June 28, 1945 and remained married until Edgar Bergen's death in 1978.

As an actress, Frances Bergen has had supporting roles in a variety of films. She made her debut in sinking the Titanic (1953); then she played in Robert Z. Leonards Your Twelve Men ( Her Twelve Men , 1954) and Douglas Sirks Interlude (1957). In the 1958/59 by CBS turned western series Yancy Derringer she played the game club owner Madame Francine in 19 of the 34 episodes on the side of main actor Jock Mahoney ( Yancy Derringer ) and his companion X Brands ( Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah ) .

In the 1980s she played minor roles in films such as American Gigolo , The Sting II , The Muppets Take Manhattan , The Morning After and Made in America . She has also had guest roles on television series including The Millionaire , The Dick Powell Show , Barnaby Jones , MacGyver, and Murder is Her Hobby .

She also appeared in two episodes of Murphy Brown , her daughter Candice Bergen's series. After the death of his longtime wife Alexis Smith , she was in a relationship with actor Craig Stevens .

Frances Bergen died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on October 2, 2006 at the age of 84.
