Harry Cording
Harry Cording , born in Hector Cording , (born April 26, 1891 in Wellington , Somerset , (or Portsmouth ), England , † September 1, 1954 in Sun Valley , California ) was a British actor who was mainly used in henchman roles.
life and career
There is confusion about Harry Cording's origin: Wellington is often given in England, but occasionally Portsmouth is also given. A few sources even named New York City as the place of birth, which is now considered wrong. As a young man he emigrated to America and made his film debut there in 1925, while the film was still silent. He was primarily cast as a supporting actor, as in his last command and The Patriot from 1928 each on the side of Emil Jannings . He succeeded in switching to the sound film, but now he mostly had to be content with small roles, which were often not mentioned in the credits. Cording mostly only got the chance to play more substantial roles in B-films.
Because of his beefy stature and his beard, the character actor was primarily committed to the embodiment of mostly grim criminals, police officers, soldiers and henchmen. He has been particularly featured in adventure films, crime films, horror films, and westerns. In the 1934 horror flick The Black Cat , he had one of his best roles as Thamal, the creepy henchman of film villain Bela Lugosi . In the adventure classic Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds , he played the captain of the court guard in 1938, who was tasked with murdering Richard the Lionheart. In the 1940s he played various supporting roles in nine of the 14 films from the Sherlock Holmes series with Basil Rathbone and was seen more often than any other actor involved in non-recurring roles. With For a Fistful of Money he was able to book a small success shortly before his death with a role as archenemy of Kirk Douglas .
His last of nearly 300 films was Out of Eden (1955), in which he played a bouncer. Harry Cording died in California at the age of 63. He was married to his wife Margaret until his death and they had four children.
