Love under Black Sails is an American pirate film directed by Gordon Douglas from 1950 , based on the 1922 novel Peter Blut's Odyssey by Rafael Sabatini .

action

Dr. Peter Blood is an Irish doctor who was arrested during the Monmouth Revolt for tending to a wounded Irish rebel. He is sold as a slave in the West Indies. He managed to escape and became the captain of the ship "Avenger". He and his sailors become feared pirates who prefer to board and plunder Spanish ships.

King Charles II of Spain instructs the Marquis de Riconete to catch the dreaded pirate so that the attacks on ships flying the Spanish flag stop. When Blood tries to replenish his supplies on a Spanish island, his men are betrayed by the slave trader Fairfax. The marquis tries to find out the whereabouts of their captain from the seamen by means of torture.

Blood disguises himself as a greengrocer to find and free his men. He meets Pepita Rosados, with whom he befriends. She tells him that many of Fairfax's slaves are terminally ill. Blood goes to Fairfax to force him to help. He learns that the slave trader is having problems with a niece of the Marquis, Isabelita Sotomayor.

Suspecting Fairfax of helping Blood, the Marquis secretly lets his men follow his niece to the slave trader's house. Isabelita tries to get Fairfax to sail with her to mainland Spain. After the conversation, the marquis's men attacked. Blood, still disguised as a greengrocer, can take the wounded Fairfax to a tavern and take care of him there. He promises Isabelita to take her to the mainland if she stands up for Fairfax with her uncle. Blood learns what the marquis's seal looks like and tries to forge it.

Blood tries to get his people out of the dungeon with a forged letter, but the fraud is recognized. However, Blood manages to escape with his men. The marquis does not want to give up trying to catch Blood. Isabelita learns that he wants to have the tavern owner tortured. She believes that Blood has already sailed and reveals his whereabouts to save the tavern owner the torture.

The incoming tide prevented Blood from settling. The marquis can put it at sea. In the battle that followed, the Marquis's ship was set on fire and was attempting to ram Blood's ship. Blood's men can destroy the enemy ship, however. After their victory, Blood and his men sail away, while Isabelita stays on the island and sets up a new government to end slavery.
