Heinz Piper (born March 4, 1908 , † February 1972 in Hamburg ) was a German actor , presenter , radio play and voice actor .

biography

After training as an actor, Piper made his feature film debut in Georg Jacoby's adaptation of Der Bettelstudent with Marika Rökk and Johannes Heesters in 1936 . This was followed by appearances in productions such as Es shine the stars , love can lie (both 1937) and Die Korallenprinzessin (1938). In 1938 he was the first television announcer when he first attempted a German television program .

After the Second World War , Piper rarely worked for cinema productions such as Josef von Báky's drama The Man Who Sells himself or for television productions; He had guest roles in the series Cliff Dexter , The Brides of My Sons and The Journalist .

Instead, Piper played increasingly on Hamburg theaters ( Thalia Theater , Theater im Zimmer) and on the radio (including as spokesman for the NDR series Saturday Nightclub) .

However, he became known to a wide audience as a presenter of television programs. On May 1, 1956, Piper hosted the first German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Grand Prix from the large broadcasting hall of the NWDR in Cologne . Whether this broadcast took place is controversial. He also hosted the Perry Como Show .

His most famous appearance is also an introduction. For the television recording of the sketch Dinner for One from April 30 to May 4, 1963 in Studio B of the NDR in Hamburg-Lokstedt, director Heinz Dunkhase used Piper as a moderator to explain the English-speaking audience in an introduction to the sketch. To this day, Piper can be seen and heard on the third ARD programs every New Year's Eve .

In addition, Piper borrowed as a voice actor and his voice. a. Geoffrey Keen (March through Hell , On the Wrong Track), Walter Rilla (Seconds of Despair) and Patrick Macnee ( Battleship Graf Spee ) .

His son Tommi Piper (* 1941) is also an actor and voice actor.
