Bolero initially describes part of the costume of the Spanish torero : a waist-short jacket that is open at the front, long-sleeved and decorated with colored trimmings .

As a Spanish woman's costume , the bolero (also known as Figaro jacket ) is a waist-short jacket that is open at the front, with or without sleeves or lapels . From the second half of the 19th century it was worn with the crinoline , from the beginning of the 20th century with the dress of the Sans-Ventre line and to this day repeatedly combined with summer or cocktail dresses. Boleros are also worn with evening , bridal or cocktail dresses .

A variant that is made from a rectangle and the sides are sewn together to form sleeves is also known as a soul warmer .

A stiff, round Spanish hat with an open brim is also called a bolero .
