The versatility as a pianist, conductor and composer makes Mustonen an exceptional figure in musical life. His expressive interpretations are characterized by violent outbursts and sensitive behavior. His recordings, which lie apart from the established canon, are considered milestones in the history of interpretation. As a conductor, he has directed many world-class orchestras and founded the Helsinki Festival Orchestra. The composer Mustonen emerged with his own contemporary music and with adaptations of older works, taking up contrapuntal-interwoven compositions and works from the 20th century as well as ideas from the 17th and 18th centuries.
