The exhibition on home decor presents regional costumes, furniture painted in the style of the Zaan region, and everyday objects from houses in the Zaan region. The permanent exhibition currently comprises five partial exhibitions: "De Zaanstreek maakt het" (made in the Zaanstreek), "Typisch Zaans" (typical Zaan region), "Monet en het Zaanse Landschap" (Monet and the landscape of the Zaan region), "Monuments Spreken" (talking monuments - the Zaanstreek in World War II) and the “Verkade Experience”. The weaver's house, the cooperage and the Jisper fisherman's hut are located on the grounds of the main building.

Exhibition De Zaanstreek maakt het - Made in the Zaanstreek

De Zaanstreek maakt het

The permanent exhibition "De Zaanstreek maakt het" (made in the Zaanstreek) presents the industrial history of the Zaanstreek. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Zaan region was known for its numerous mills and shipyards. The view of the Zaan region changed in the 19th century when many factories were built along the banks of the Zaan. The creation of the North Sea Canal (1876), an overseas port, a lock and a railway line at the beginning of the twentieth century ensured that the factories and the food industry in the Zaan region could develop into one of the most important economic sectors in the Netherlands between 1918 and 1965. The Zaanstreek is also popularly known as the "pantry of the Netherlands".

Verkade Experience

The Verkade Experience consists of the Verkade family's collection, which includes photos, displays, packaging, posters and three working production lines for chocolate, biscuits and tea lights. There is also a treasure chamber in which you can see the watercolors that served as templates for Verkade's photo albums.

Claude Monet: De Voorzaan en de Westerhem (1871)

Monet en het Zaanse landschap

In 2015, the museum acquired the painting “Voorzaan and Westerhem” by the French impressionist Claude Monet , who was in the Zaan region from June 4 to October 8, 1871. The picture shows the view of the Voorzaan, the section of the Zaan south of the locks in the center of Zaandam, and the island of Westerhem, in front of which sailing ships can be seen. The De Bakker, De Roode Leeuw and De Notenboom sawmills are located on the island. In total, Monet painted three versions of this motif. The peculiarity of creating several versions of one picture was later regarded as characteristic of Impressionism , with which Monet experimented in the Zaan region. He wrote to his friend, the painter Camille Pissarro : "Zaandam is extremely remarkable, and there are enough motifs here for a lifetime: houses in all colors, hundreds of mills and wonderful boats."

"Voorzaan and Westerhem" by Monet is part of the exhibition about the Zaan region as a source of inspiration for artists. In addition, all twenty-five pictures and the nine sketches that Monet created in Zaandam in 1871 can be seen in their actual size in an interactive presentation. The painting is part of the permanent picture exhibition and the portrait gallery of people from the Zaan region (actually the picture does not belong to it, but can be found next to this series). The portrait collection includes pictures of members of the families from the Zaan region who were successful in one of the industries typical of this region, mayors, industrialists and artists. Furthermore, the collection contains individual pictures of known and less known people from the Zaan region.

Typical Zaans

The permanent exhibition "Typisch Zaans" (typically Zaanstreek) is a reconstruction of an exhibition from 1874, which forms the basis for the collection. In the Zaan region, historians and collectors recorded the history of the region in books and collections. In August and September 1874 the “Tentoonstelling van Zaanlandsche Oudheden en Merkwaardigheden” (exhibition of Zaanland antiques and curiosities) took place in the town hall of Zaandam. A modern reconstruction of this exhibition from the 19th century shows what was then considered typical of the Zaan region.

Monuments speak

In the exhibition “Monumenten spreken” (speaking monuments), the Second World War in the Zaan region is discussed. The exhibition also tells the story behind the twenty-eight war and resistance memorials in the region that reference events during World War II. In 28 small documentaries from the “Stichting Monumenten Spreken” foundation, eyewitnesses report on the war.

The weaver house

The weaver house

The weaver's house shows visitors something about the weaving trade in the 19th century. In the building, which housed two families and five looms in the 18th century , the life of a weaver family is depicted today with two looms. Until the beginning of the 20th century, when the weaver's house was still on the Dorpsstraat in Assendelft , the building served as a home and workplace. In 2015 the house in the Zaanse Schans was rebuilt.

The cooperage

The cooperage shows something about the profession of cooper around 1960. The furnishings come from the cooperage and barrel store SR Tiemstra en Zonen from Oostzanerwerf. The last son of the family, Jaap Tiemstra, bequeathed the cooperage and its furnishings to the museum. The handcrafted barrels were used to store food.

The Jisper fishing hut

The Jisper fishing hut originally stood in the village of Jisp and shows the everyday life of a fisher woman before the industrial revolution (around the middle of the 19th century). Children and adults can put on typical costumes from this period to go back in time. The house is a reconstruction as the original from 1860 is in the Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen.

Honey Breethuis

In the Honig Breethuis, visitors can learn up close how a family of merchants and paper manufacturers from the Zaan region lived and lived around 1830. The museum is located on the Lagedijk in Zaandijk.

Tsar Peter House

The Zar-Peter-Haus is located in the center of Zaandam and is one of the oldest wooden houses in the Netherlands and was built in 1632 as a workers' house from old ship wood. The Russian Tsar Peter the Great lived in this house while he learned the trade of a ship's carpenter here in 1697. To protect the house, a facade was first erected around the building in 1823. The current facade dates from 1895.

Building and location

Since the opening, the museum has been located in a building with an area of 16,500 m². The museum building designed by the architect Cor van Hillo has been extended by a further wing since March 11, 2009, where the Verkade Experience is exhibited. The ZMuseum is located on the Kalverpolder , a nature reserve that is under the supervision of the Dutch state forest administration Staatsbosbeheer .

In 2001, the museum won the European Museum of the Year Award . The jury was particularly enthusiastic about the modern and open design of the building, the location of the building with regard to the historical reconstruction in the Zaanse Schans, the educational offers and the presentation of the permanent collection. The lighting design of the presentation won two further prizes: the Award of Merit of the Edison Award 2000 and the International Illumination Design Award 2001.
