Jan Zwart (born August 20, 1877 in Zaandam ; † July 13, 1937 there ) was a Dutch organist , composer and a student of H. van Eyk.

Career

At the age of fourteen, Jan Zwart received organ lessons from Gerardus Bartus van Krieken (* 1836, † 1913), the organist at the Zuiderkerk in Rotterdam. In 1893 Jan Zwart became organist in the Dutch Reformed Church in Rotterdam . At the age of eighteen he received lessons from Hendrik de Vries (* 1857; † 1929), the organist of the Laurenskerk in Rotterdam, under whose guidance he made the first compositions. A little later he was hired as organist in the municipality of Capelle aan den IJssel . From 1898 he worked as an organist for the Evangelical Lutheran Church (Hersteld Evangelisch-Lutherse Kerk) in Amsterdam. From 1907 he was also cantor here. Here he began to give weekly organ concerts in the summer of 1914, which he continued until his death.

Jan Zwart was also the first Dutch organist to make recordings for the radio. With his radio broadcasts, which he produced regularly from 1925 to 1932, he aroused the interest of a larger audience in the church organ. He also worked as an organ teacher. One of his better-known students was Feike Asma .

As an organ historian, Jan Zwart published articles on the older Dutch organ history and thus renewed interest in the organ music of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, among other things . Jan Zwart also composed organ music himself. In 1917 he began issuing the Nederlandse Orgelmuziek . On Zwart's initiative, organ days were also held in 's-Hertogenbosch , Alkmaar and Deventer from 1931 .
