Bob Kaper (born June 19, 1939 in Zaandam ) is a Dutch musician of traditional jazz ( clarinet , alto saxophone ), who led the Dutch Swing College Band from 1990 to 2020 .

Kaper graduated from the Zaanlands Lyceum and attended jazz concerts as a teenager. As a musician he is self-taught ; his first instrument was the harmonica . In 1955 he toured Germany with the New Orleans Syncopaters . During his military service he was deputy head of the military band. In late 1957 he founded The Beale Street Seven , which he directed. With the band he was seen on Dutch television in 1961; then he toured with the group in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany and accompanied the singer Milly Scott , with the 1963 single Up a Lazy River / Crawdad Song was created.

Kaper traveled with the Dutch Swing College Band in 1966 to replace the sick Peter Schilperoort ; since 1969 he was a member of the band with which he toured worldwide. He also appeared on the TROS radio program Sesjun in 1975 with his Flashback Quartet . With this formation, which included Kaper, the pianist Marcel Hendricks, the bassist Henk Bosch van Drakestein and the drummer Huub Janssen , he recorded several albums, initially Memories of You (1975); In 1981 the Flashback Quartet performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival with vibraphonist Dany Doriz .

After Schilperoort's death in 1990, Kaper took over the musical direction of the Dutch Swing College Band , which he rejuvenated and modernized. In 1999 he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Queen of the Netherlands because, as a musician and especially as the leader of this band, he made an important contribution to the development of jazz music in the Netherlands. In May 2020 he announced his departure from the band for reasons of age.
