Jan Jongepier

Jan Jongepier (born February 26, 1941 in Zaandam ; † July 31, 2011 in Leeuwarden ) was a Dutch organist , improviser and organ expert.

Life

Jongepier grew up in a Reformed family and church and initially received organ lessons from his father, who was an amateur organist and student of Cor Kee . Cor Kroonenberg later became his teacher. At the Amsterdam Conservatory he studied organ with Piet Kee . In 1957, at the age of 16, he became organist at the great organ of Rudolf Garrels in Purmerend (1742). In 1981 he became organist at the Grote of Jacobijnerkerk in Leeuwarden , where he had access to the three manual organ by Christian Müller (1727). He held this position until 2007. In 2003 he was appointed titular organist of the Garrels organ in Purmerend. Jongepier was known for his organ improvisations. He won national and international prizes, such as 1970, 1971 and 1972 first prize at the Haarlem International Improvisation Competition ( Internationaal Orgelimprovisatie Concours ). In 2004 he received the Sweelinck Prize.

From 1963 to 1973 he taught at the music school in Purmerend and from 1972 to 1992 he was a lecturer at the conservatories in Leeuwarden Groningen . Jacob de Haan and Tjeerd van der Ploeg were among his students . He was an expert in the history of the organ and organ building, especially in the field of organs in Friesland . He wrote numerous books and articles and made various CD recordings. As an expert he has appeared in over 200 organ restorations and new building projects.
