Luc Nijholt (born July 29, 1961 in Zaandam ) is a former Dutch soccer player who is currently an assistant coach at Shandong Luneng Taishan . His son Gianluca Nijholt plays for NAC Breda .

Career

As a player

Nijholt started his career with HFC Haarlem in the early 1980s . He spent six years at Haarlem before moving to AZ Alkmaar and then to FC Utrecht within two years . Between 1989 and 1990 he played in Switzerland with BSC Old Boys Basel . Then Nijholt moved to the Scottish club FC Motherwell . After three years he then joined the English club Swindon Town for £ 175,000. In 1995 he moved back to his home country for club FC Volendam until he ended his career in 1998.

As a trainer

His first coaching position was at Stormvogels Telstar , although his old clubs FC Motherwell and Swindon Town also showed interest in signing. He looked after the team from 2005 to 2008. For the 2008/09 season he was then hired as an assistant coach at FC Red Bull Salzburg , which he left after just one year. In 2010 he coached the Qatari national soccer team together with Co Adriaanse . Since 2012 he has been assistant coach of the Chinese club Shandong Luneng Taishan .
