Bookoff Corporation KK ( Japanese ブ ッ ク オ フ コ ー ポ レ ー シ ョ ン 株式会社 , Bukku Ofu Kōporēshon Kabushiki kaisha , English Bookoff Corporation Limited ), also Book • Off, is the largest company in Japan that specializes in trading in second-hand goods . The largest chain within the company is the Book • Off chain, which specializes in entertainment media.
Company history
The first branch of the Book • Off chain was opened in May 1990 , before the actual company was founded on August 1, 1991. The first franchise license was issued in October 1991 and the first branch was opened on the basis of this license in November of the same year. In December 1994 the 100th branch nationwide was opened.
In addition to the specialized chain Book • Off, which deals exclusively with used print and entertainment media, from November 1996 the new chain Hard • Off also started trading used computers and audio and video electronics. In the following years 1999 and 2000 the range was expanded with the chains B • Kids and B • Sports to include children's and baby items as well as sports and outdoor items. In September 2000, the Tsutaya chain was added as a media library chain.
The largest chain within the company is Book • Off with more than 900 branches throughout Japan since the end of 2007.
Bookoff outside of Japan
At the beginning of 2000, the first branch outside of Japan was opened in Hawaii . In the following years additional branches were opened in the United States , Paris ( France , 2004), Vancouver ( Canada , 2005) and Seoul ( South Korea , 2006).
