The Zaan is a ten-kilometer-long river that runs right through the municipality of Zaanstad , with the first few kilometers forming the border with the municipality of Wormerland : from Oostknollendam (to Wormerland) and West-Knollendam (to Zaanstad) in the north to the dam in Zaandam in the south.

From the dam on, the flowing water is called Voorzaan and there forms a connection with the North Sea Canal .

The Zaan was originally a Fehnkanal and ran from the Starnmeer to the IJ .
