Willem Johannes Ouweneel (born June 2, 1944 in Zaandam ) is a Dutch biologist , philosopher and theologian . He is the author of numerous popular science books, some of which have also been translated into German.

academic career

Ouweneel studied biology at Utrecht University from 1962 to 1967 and received his doctorate in 1970 with a thesis on Drosophila . From 1966 to 1968 he worked as a biology teacher in Apeldoorn and from 1968 to 1976 as a research assistant at the Hubrecht laboratory ( International Institute of Embryology ) in Utrecht . In 1977 he founded the Evangelische Hogeschool in Amersfoort with some other Christian scholars , where he taught philosophy , psychology , apologetics , ethics , cultural history , theology and biblical studies until his retirement in 2009 . In 1986 he received his PhD in philosophy from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam . From 1988 to 2009 he taught dogmatics and prolegomena of theology at the Evangelical Theological Academie in Zwijndrecht (Netherlands) . From 1990 to 1997 he held an extraordinary professorship for philosophy of science at the Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys in Potchefstroom (South Africa) , from 1991 to 1994 a lecturer in ethics at the Evangelical School for Theology in Amersfoort, and from 1996 to 2001 a professorship for philosophy , Theology and Psychology at the State-independent Theological University Basel . In 1993 he received his doctorate in theology from the Universiteit van die Oranje-Vrystaat in Bloemfontein (South Africa) . Since 1996 he has been professor of philosophy and dogmatics at the Evangelical Theological Faculteit in Leuven (Belgium) .

Community activities

Ouweneel has been internationally active in the ministry of the Brethren movement since 1976 . Originally belonging to their "closed" wing, from the beginning of the 1990s he turned to a more "open" position. Since the late 1990s, he has also recorded charismatic content. His positive assessment of the charismatic healer TB Joshua from Nigeria , which he partially revised after massive public criticism, is controversial . With regard to the natural sciences, he takes a moderately creationist point of view.

The content of his books covers many fields. This is how the original manuscript for the popular book How the Bible came about goes back to him (Ouweneel himself leads this book in the list of his publications). Several sections from it are criticized as inadequate in Reading Christian Books critically .

Activity in the media

Ouweneel has been a freelancer for the Christian broadcasting company Evangelische Omroep (EO) since 1975 , for which he has designed numerous radio and television programs on theological, pastoral, church history, musical and current topics. He can currently be heard with a weekly column ( De Verbazing van Willem Ouweneel ) on the program EO.nl op zaterdag , which is broadcast every Saturday on the nationwide radio wave Radio 5.
