TB Joshua

Temitope Balogun Joshua (born June 12, 1963 in Arigidi-Akoko in Ondo , Nigeria ) is a pastor, evangelist and healing preacher of the charismatic movement . He is married to Evelyn Joshua. They have three children together.

T. B. Joshua founded the “Synagogue Church of All Nations” (SCOAN) and the television channel “Emmanuel TV” in Lagos with around 50,000 visitors a week.

Life

Not much is officially known about the years before the establishment of the Synagogue Church, about training and previous activities. It is said that even the first years of Joshua's life were accompanied by strange events. First of all, 100 years before he was born, it was predicted in Nigeria that a boy would grow up out of a poor family, whom God would “use mightily”. The former US healing evangelist A. A. Allan is also said to have prophesied the life of Temitope Balogun Joshua 50 years ago. His mother's pregnancy lasted 15 months. In the fourth year of life, a boulder is said to have pushed through the roof, which almost killed the little one. The incident inspired his mother to name the boy “Temitope”, which means: “What you (God) did for me is thankful.” It is believed that Satan killed the child even then wanted to. According to his own statements, Joshua grew up in the Anglican Church in Nigeria and was initially the head of the children's services in three congregations. In his youth he led the “Student Christian Fellowship” at the St. Stephen Anglican Primary School, Agbalaku, Arigidi, Ondo state, the prayer meetings and Bible examinations there. Even then Joshua was the "little pastor".

T. B. Joshua's ecclesiastical service has a reputation for Pentecostal enthusiasm. It receives an enormous number of visitors from all over the world; Numerous believers from Europe and the USA also travel to his headquarters in Lagos , especially the physically, mentally and chronically ill, to experience healing, liberation, blessings or spiritual growth. Shortly after the founding of the Synagogue Church in 1992, reports of miraculous healings made the rounds that went beyond anything that had previously been heard of spiritual healings . It is said that his prayers could even cure diseases such as HIV / AIDS, cancer, blindness, paraplegia , epilepsy and bipolar disorder . He should also be able to tell people the cause of their problems through divinely revealed prophecy (e.g. seeing the invisible world, visions, dreams), recognize and remove curses and predict various personal and worldwide events. Due to the numerous events, the Nigerian pastor was given the title "Prophet" by his followers, by which he has been known ever since. Visitors compare the life of the congregation with the reports from the Acts of the Apostles and praise Joshua's love, humility and generosity as well as the diaconal work in addition to the focus on Christ.

The aim of his ministry is to implement the will of God in his life, to support the listeners in the “prayer life” and in the relationship with the Triune God and to teach them what faith means. Thereby they could become overcomers of their problems, lead a holy life and “be light”. T. B. Joshua sees himself as a vessel or tool used by God, which has to fulfill its purpose as such by means of gifts of grace given to him .

T. B. Joshua sees himself as part of the "worldwide body of Christ" and - after many years of resistance and rejection - is now accepted by some apparently popular personalities in the evangelical scene. He already did missionary work in the context of crusades in Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Korea and Colombia, to which he was invited by local Christians. He called on the visitors to follow Jesus Christ and to join a committed Christian church on site. Conferences were then held for pastors' training, which were very well received. In the same way, Joshua sent one of his senior staff to the United States. The events are regularly accompanied by paranormal phenomena, which are interpreted biblically as "signs and wonders".

SCOAN has another branch in Ghana. In the USA the work is published by a Russian church in Washington. Emmanuel TV broadcasts around the clock during the week and live streams on weekends, making church life accessible to the public. The SCOAN and Emmanuel TV are said to be financed by donations from their church members and international partners. Guests also allegedly have to pay a flat rate for accommodation and full board, the income from which is used for church purposes. According to an internet source, Joshua preaches that no financial compensation should be sought for healing prayers and that money is an obstacle to healing. Afterwards, worshipers have the opportunity to be provided with food for little money. SCOAN maintains its own large kitchens for this purpose. The board should consist of five men who support T. B. Joshua in his diaconal service.

Teaching

Holy Scripture should be the starting point and model for all action. The Son of God, Redeemer and victor over death and the devil is praised as the healer and blessing giver. Prayers and seekers publicly honor Christ and his power of resurrection. The "miracle" is an important part of his theology. The main reason why many visitors come to his church from all over the world is to experience healing for their physical and psychological ailments. It is also about belief in miracles, which is shaped by expectations. Faith is the confirmation of unfulfilled promises of God. To turn God's promise into reality, it takes faith. Joshua and the other intercessors on site see themselves as brothers and sisters of the needy Christians. Healing and deliverance are God's grace and God's work alone, all prayers are acts of charity. Without a heartfelt compassion in the heart of the prayer, according to T. B. Joshua, God's arm would not act. Through the laying on of hands or mass prayer, people are freed from demons and healed from diseases. Guilt plays a subordinate role in Joshua's theology and is assigned more to Satan than to humans. For those watching on Emmanuel TV, he prays for finances, health, marriages, personal breakthroughs and against demons. According to the video recordings to be found on YouTube, emphasis is placed again and again on the fact that God is not a dream machine. It is not enough just to want to receive blessings and welfare. The word of God must be made the “standard” in the life of every believer, sin must be renounced and a close relationship with Christ must be cultivated. Nothing hold the course of a believing Christian like a deep love for his Savior. Whoever neglects this runs the risk of losing his healing or liberation from demons again.

Joshua sees human selfishness and corruption as a threat to society. This can only be met with an example of love, care and generosity. Man can overcome evil and his carnal nature only through the word of God. Joshua is convinced that this love for Jesus Christ and for fellow human beings, like the act of forgiveness, is the linchpin of human coexistence. The Christian life is at the same time always a free decision and should never be characterized by control, dominance and manipulation, so another preacher of the SCOAN.

In the church center it came a. for a reconciliation meeting between the family of the former President of Liberia, Samuel K. Doe , and his killer Yormie Johnson . He was a warlord at the time and had brutally executed the president. During the meeting, the family publicly forgave the killer.

motto

The motto of Emmanuel TV is: "Changing lives, changing nations, changing the world" (changing lives, changing nations, changing the world). Church members and partners of the Emmanuel TV organization regularly assign each other various mottos , such as: For example: "Emmanuel" (God is with us), "Let love lead" (Let love lead) and "We are sons and daughters of love" (We are sons and daughters of love).

Diakonia

For T. B. Joshua, service to people is very important. The church takes care of the socially neglected such as the handicapped, widows, orphans, the elderly and the homeless in Lagos and the surrounding area. To supply them, it maintains warehouses with rice worth around 100,000 euros. People in need are regularly picked up by bus. Also in Ghana and worldwide such as B. in Russia, Ukraine, the USA, Pakistan and Mexico is helped.

After the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Joshua sent a team of medical professionals and first aiders on site to set up the "Emmanuel Clinic". On December 22, 2008, President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua presented him with a national prize for humanitarian aid .

T. B. Joshua pays numerous scholarships from gifted Nigerian students. In 2008 he founded the soccer club “My People FC” for young people from needy families. a. produced the U-17 soccer world champion Sani Emmanuel. This won the FIFA Silver Shoe .

The dispute over T. B. Joshua

T. B. Joshua's unconventional methods are viewed with great skepticism by Christian critics. The television preacher Chris Okotie , who is known throughout Nigeria, accuses him of "shamanistic practices". The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), the umbrella organization of the Pentecostal congregations in Nigeria, is said to have denied membership to the Synagogue Church. Other voices claim that T. B. Joshua never asked to join the association and that the aggressive stance of fellow Christians in Nigeria is due to lies and envy. The founder of Christ Embassy (also represented in Germany), Chris Oyakhilome , known as "Pastor Chris", said in an interview that Chris Okotie, Bishop Mike Okonkwo, Pastor Tunde Bakare and those in charge of the PFN board were deceived because they believed the wrong sources. He also added that the SCOAN was a member of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), similar to the Working Group of Christian Churches in Germany , and that this fact was confirmation enough, regardless of a questionable membership in the PFN.

Theological arguments hardly play a role in the dispute over T. B. Joshua, both on the part of the opponents and the supporters. It is argued, if at all theologically, in a purely biblical manner. The controversy can, however, be understood as a dispute about how far a specifically African understanding of Pentecostal preaching may deviate from the universal scheme.

The arguments of the opponents and supporters can be summarized in five points:

  • Firstly, it is claimed that T. B. Joshua's healing methods are not biblically transmitted.
  • Second, it is claimed that the miracles came from occult sources.
  • Third, it is claimed that the devil can also work miracles and sends false prophets to deceive.
  • Fourth, the attempt is made to demonstrate logical contradictions in the messages and prophecies of T. B. Joshua, which prove that he is not from God.
  • Fifth, he is accused of fraud and manipulation, for which there are many witnesses.

The arguments of its proponents are:

  • T. B. Joshua preach the love of Christ and the Holy Scriptures, humbly reject any designation as a healer and always point to Jesus and the Holy Spirit as the source of strength.
  • The healings and so-called liberations in connection with the prayer "In the name of Jesus Christ" are the evidence of biblically founded action, since the devil is known to be unable to cast out a devil.
  • A big difference to false prophets is that prophet Joshua can show the necessary fruits in many ways, visibly implement the will of God and preach hatred against sin and the devil, but never against humans. These properties are absolutely characteristic.
  • T. B. Joshua works seriously and conclusively, as visitors have to present current medical certificates and almost every action is documented on video.
  • The allegations of fraud are not tenable, as they are based only on assumptions, defamation and defamatory statements by prosecutors.

The followers of T. B. Joshuas as well as himself try to avoid direct confrontation with criticism based on the example of Jesus. Willem J. Ouweneel , lecturer at various evangelical universities, replied to the critics that they run the risk of "blaspheming the Holy Spirit". In his book Heals the Sick , Ouweneel makes several references to the Nigerian healing preacher . Despite an apparent distancing, he still maintains contact with SCOAN. Although T. B. Joshua meets with opposition in Africa, his proponents include some prominent Africans who have claimed positive religious change in the course of their lives.

Media hustle and bustle

After increasing reports in Nigeria and around the world over the past decade that alleged church members and private tour operators were collecting donations and organizing visits for a fee on behalf of Joshua and SCOAN, the church was forced to take countermeasures and broadcast clarifications on Emmanuel TV .

In July 2014, T. B. Joshua held an evangelism in Colombia under the flag of Emmanuel TV at the Estadio Olímpico Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium . The cityscape was so changed that weekend that the local police leadership in Cali invited and honored him. In view of the difficult situation in their own country, this means a special honor. However, the majority of the population and fellow Christians in Nigeria reject him and his ministry.

In view of the recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa, the clergyman was welcomed by high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Health, namely Dr. Jide Idris (Lagos State Commissioner for Health) and Professor Abdulsalami Nasidi (Director, Center for Disease Control), because of concerns that Ebola patients could visit the SCOAN and infect other visitors. According to official media, they should have expressed their appreciation to T. B. Joshua, recognized him as a "man of God" and asked for cooperation.

On September 12, 2014, the new building of a guest house at his church in the Nigerian metropolis of Lagos collapsed . In addition to 124 rescued people, 115 were killed, of which 84 were South Africans registered. The incident created tension with South Africa . The cause of the collapse is still unclear, as a surveillance camera filmed a previously unregistered aircraft that flew by four times in the immediate vicinity before the accident. SCOAN does not rule out that this was an attack by the Boko Haram on the preacher, as he was regularly in the building. Two attacks have already been prevented in the past. The growing influence of the Christian Church in Nigeria is a thorn in the side of the Islamic terrorist group. SCOAN believes Boko Haram wants to prevent international guests from coming.

On September 14, 2015, it was announced that SCOAN had bought an expensive private jet ( Gulfstream G550 ). Joshua's media spokesman denied that the plane had cost the new price.

He was also criticized for certain prophecies:

  • In 2016, he predicted that Hillary Clinton would win the US presidential election. When Donald Trump won the election, the Fabook entries on the prophecy, edited by Joshua, were deleted. Instead, a statement was made that the prayers of his supporters had changed the election result and that the prophecy was therefore not fulfilled.
  • On March 8, 2020, Joshua claimed in his Sunday service "Corona" would "end on March 27, 2020". It would "disappear just as it came into the world." This did not happen.

Books

In addition to his sermons, T. B. Joshua has written four books so far:

  • The Mirror , in collaboration with Evelyn Joshua
  • The Step Between You And The Cure
  • What The Future Holds
  • Daily Time With God
