Parish Church of St. Lambertus

The Catholic parish church of St. Lambertus is a listed church building in Rellinghausen , a district of Essen .

History and architecture

The church was originally a separate church and since the 10th century a collegiate church under the patronage of St. James. It had parish rights and was re-consecrated in 943 by the abbot of Werden, although it is not known whether it was a new church building or the extension of an existing church. The church was probably a three-aisled, Romanesque pillar basilica with three semicircular apses and a square tower that has been preserved. Around 1300 the building was expanded by adding a transept with a high choir . The prayer room of the canonesses on the gallery was replaced. The extension replaced the three apses. The church was bigger than today's. Around 1300 a vault was drawn in instead of the wooden ceiling . The building was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century due to strong cracks in the walls and the belt arches, only the tower and a sacristy from the 17th century remained.

The classical quarry stone hall stands in the abandoned cemetery. The ceiling in the interior is flat, the walls are structured by large arched windows, the stilted semicircular apse is drawn in. The building was built from 1826 to 1828 according to a design by the district architect Otto von Gloeden , which was corrected by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The Romanesque west tower from the 12th century has been preserved. The building was destroyed in 1944 during World War II except for the surrounding walls. In the rebuilt church, which was rededicated in 1949, only the exterior of the hall was restored. The panel structure of the west tower was cut off and the baroque hood was replaced by a blunt pyramid roof. The interior was restored in 1994.

On August 1, 2015, the church building was closed for renewed renovation work. During this work, the heating, lighting and other electrical systems were replaced, walls were painted and the organ was partly dismantled, cleaned and re-tuned.

Furnishing

The round basin with heads is a fragment of a Romanesque font from the 12th century. The altar painting from the beginning of the 18th century comes from the St. Anna Chapel . It shows a priest collecting stolen hosts again.

In 1993 a three-manual organ by Flentrop Orgelbouw was installed. The instrument has 36 stops on three manuals and a pedal. The playing and stop actions are electric.
