St. Anne's Chapel

The Catholic St. Anna Chapel is a listed church building in Essen-Rellinghausen . Their history goes back to the beginning of the 16th century.

History and architecture

The previous building was an atonement chapel built in 1516. At the end of the service on July 25, 1516, while the then annual Jakobskirmes was taking place in Rellinghausen, two church abusers stole the ciborium with the consecrated hosts . They were only interested in the golden chalice and threw the hosts under a bush where they were found. At this point the atonement chapel with the name Capelle Corporis Christi was built for the holy place . Few findings have survived about the building. According to indications in archive documents, it was probably a very small half-timbered chapel on a stone plinth; as there are reports of paintings, the interior was probably plastered.

On April 30, 1693, Master Conrad Fischer received the order to build a new chapel in the same place. The building was completed in 1707 and is an example of the local rural baroque . The quarry stone building, closed on three sides, is crowned on the ridge by a roof turret. From 1841 to 1843 six of the twelve window openings were bricked up. The entrance in the north facade was closed and the elliptical vault dismantled and replaced by a flat mirrored ceiling. The intervention in the structure of the ceiling caused considerable damage to the roof structure, which is why the original vault was restored. The masonry belt arch was secured by an embedded anchor. The simplicity of the room is underlined by the restrained, honeycomb glazing.

The restoration work from 1973 to 1975 provided valuable information about the building chronology and the changes. In 1985 the chapel was placed under a preservation order.

Until today there is a procession every July 25th, the name day of St. Anne , to commemorate the desecration of the sacraments through the robbery of the host. It leads from the St. Anna Chapel to the St. Lambertus Collegiate Church .

Furnishing

The altar base comes from the previous chapel. The altar structure was made around 1710. The bell was cast in 1526.
