Crossbones is an American adventure series developed by Neil Cross , James V. Hart and Amanda Welles for NBC television . The television series is based on the pirate Blackbeard and loosely based on the novel The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard . It first aired in the United States on May 30, 2014 on NBC.

action

18th Century: The devious and diabolical Edward Thatch, better known as Blackbeard, rules a group of thieves, outlaws and villainous sailors on New Providence . The assassin Tom Lowe is put on Blackbeard, but over time he begins to respect him. He is torn between his mission and the legendary pirate. And then he meets the outlaw Kate, with whom he falls in love.

production

In May 2012, NBC ordered the pirate series Crossbones without creating a direct-to-series pilot . The main role of the pirate Blackbeard went to Hollywood star John Malkovich in March 2013 . Hugh Laurie was previously discussed for the lead role.

As of October 2013, nine episodes were created in Puerto Rico . At the end of July 2014, the broadcaster announced that the series would be canceled after the nine episodes.

The series is based on the character Blackbeard and some historical facts, but is overall rather fictional.

reception

Overall, the criticism was mixed. Comparisons were often made with the Black Sails cable series from Starz .

Loryn Pörschke from Serienjunkies.de writes in a review of the pilot episode that "the pilot episode of the series Crossbones (...) brings the two central characters into the right constellation" and goes on to say that the story "sometimes falls short of the demands" . But she makes “continuing to look an option”, since the actors “bring so much life into the characters”.
