occupation

Cesar Chavez is a film by Diego Luna from the year 2014 with Michael Peña and John Malkovich in the lead roles. The film shows the struggle of César Chávez , who, together with the United Farm Workers union , fought for fair working conditions in California's agriculture in the 1960s.

action

The working conditions of Mexican and Filipino farm workers in California's fields are catastrophic. The activist César Chávez sneaks among the field workers and builds a union. The white farmers seem to have police and judges on their side. A court order even forbids workers to use the word huelga (Spanish for strike). César's wife resists and is imprisoned for it. After members of the union used violence, Chavez went on a hunger strike for several weeks. The boycott of California grapes announced by the union is hurting farmers. After the farmers try to sell their grapes in Europe, Chavez travels to Europe. His boycott call is a success there too. After a total of five years of industrial action, the farmers finally give in.
