Hokuriku ( Japanese 北 陸 地方 , -chihō , dt. "Region Nordland") is a sub-region of the Japanese region Chūbu . It covers the part of the region that faces the Sea of Japan .
The region includes Fukui Prefecture , Ishikawa Prefecture, and Toyama Prefecture . The boundaries are not clearly defined, many also include Niigata . Otherwise, Niigata and Nagano form the Shin'etsu region , which then forms the Hokuriku-Shin'etsu region with Hokuriku, or Hokushin'etsu region for short .
Hokuriku essentially coincides with the historical region of Hokurikudō of the Gokishichidō system or the previous Koshi province .
