The Okinawa Islands ( Japanese 沖縄諸島 , Okinawa-shotō ) are a group of islands that belongs to Japan . The islands are geographically part of the Ryūkyū Islands and politically part of Okinawa Prefecture . The largest island in the group is Okinawa's main island, Okinawa Hontō .

The archipelago lies between the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture, 20 km away, and the Sakishima Islands, 230 km away .
