Irisuna-jima ( Japanese 入 砂 島 ) or also Idesuna-jima ( 出 砂 島 ) is an island of the Japanese Ryūkyū island chain .

Although the island belongs to the municipality of Tonaki , it is actually subordinate to the 18th Wing (18th Squadron) of the US Air Force stationed at Kadena Air Base .

designation

It is listed as Irisuna-jima on the official maps of the Japanese land surveying office Kokudo Chiriin , while the US armed forces use the name Idesuna-jima. In a land register from the Keichō era (1596-1615) the name Desona is found for the island, from which Idesuna was then . Idesuna means "sand coming out" and jima means "island". The origin of today's Japanese name Irisuna in the opposite meaning "sand going in" is unknown.

geography

Irisuna-jima is located 3.5 km northwest of Tonaki-jima . The comma-shaped island with a length of 750 m and the greatest width of 550 m has an area of 0.26 km² and rises up to 32 m. It is surrounded by an atoll with the dimensions 2 × 1.5 km, the ring of which, however, does not constantly protrude above sea level.

history

Before the Second World War , the island was considered the seat of a kami and was accordingly worshiped by the residents of the neighboring island of Tonaki. Every four years a family from Tonaki was selected to live on Irisuna and take care of them.

In 1945 the island was occupied by the USA and has been used as the Idesuna Jima Range ( 出 砂 島 射 爆 撃 場 Idesuna-jima shabakugekiba ) since October 27, 1957 , and together with the Japanese air self- defense forces from November 6, 1975 . On the part of the US armed forces, the 2.45 km² site is used by the US Air Force , the US Navy and the US Marine Corps . On February 7, 1978, during a night exercise by the USS Midway and its aircraft, an incident occurred in which a tracer missile missed its target on the island and landed in an inhabited area on the neighboring island.
