Johan Gabriel Anrep (around 1900)

Johan Gabriel Anrep (born December 4, 1821 in Lekeberg ; † March 12, 1907 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish genealogist and founder of modern research on aristocracy in Sweden .

Life

Gabriel Anrep came from the German-Baltic noble family of the Lords of Anrep . His parents were Johan Wilhelm Anrep († 1848) and Maria Margareta Palin . He grew up on his father's estate in Lekeberg. After selling Lekeberg, Anrep lived in Stockholm and dedicated himself to his publishing business. In 1855 he married Maria Christina Carlson (* 1822, † 1891).

Anrep's research and publication service consisted primarily of not only collecting the genealogies of the Swedish nobility, but also using scientific methods to investigate them and freeing them from mythical origins. Nevertheless, he was sometimes compelled by the affected families or by the knight's house to only use the filiations that were proven to be untenable if he published them unchanged. This in turn was then interpreted as legitimation of the parentage, as this was published by Anrep , who had a good reputation and worked seriously . Adam Lewenhaupt and even more Gustaf Elgenstierna later started work on Anrep . The latter was able to continue this successfully after he had succeeded in emancipating himself from families and knighthood.
