Adolf Emile Cohen also: Dolf Cohen (born December 4, 1913 in Rotterdam ; † June 26, 2004 in Oegstgeest ) was a Dutch historian .

Life

Adolf Emile came from a Jewish family. He was born as the son of the historian and pharmacist Hendrik Cohen (* December 20, 1879 in Rotterdam; † March 4, 1945 in Bergen-Belsen) and his wife Flora Polak (* July 7, 1885 in Rotterdam; † March 4, 1945 in Bergen -Belsen) was born. In his childhood years he attended the Erasmus grammar school in his hometown and from 1932 studied at the University of Leiden . Here he completed his teacher’s examination in history on June 18, 1935, his doctoral examination on July 10, 1940 and received his doctorate under Johan Huizinga on August 18, 1941 with the thesis De visie op Troje van de westerse middeleeuwse geschiedschrijvers tot 1160 (German: The vision of Troy from the western medieval historians to 1160 ) as a doctor of philosophical sciences. He then worked as a teacher at the Jewish Lyceum in Haarlem until 1942 . After the Second World War, in 1945 he became an employee, later adjunct chief at the Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam .

On November 9, 1959, he was appointed professor of the history of the Middle Ages and its auxiliary sciences at the University of Leiden, which he took on on January 1, 1960 and on September 23 of the same year, his inaugural speech Otto van Freising as divorced van zijn tijd (German : Otto von Freising, as a historian of his time ). From 1969 Cohen also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University. First as dean of the philosophical faculty and from 1972 to 1976 as rector of the alma mater . Cohen married on June 14, 1945 in Haarlem Henriëtte (Hetty) Koster (born October 5, 1913 in Leeuwarden, † March 8, 1996 in Leiden), the daughter of the pharmacist Issac Koster (born October 26, 1874 in Medemblik; † 10. July 1940 in Haarlem) and his wife Marie (Mies) Esther Belinfante (born November 21, 1881 in Amsterdam; † August 6, 1969 in Haarlem), who was married on October 10, 1912 in Amsterdam, the widow of Arnold Carel Cosman (* 7. January 1910 in Leiden; † May 15, 1940 in Amsterdam, married November 16, 1939 in Haarlem). There are two sons from the marriage. The son Floris Cohen (born July 1, 1946 in Haarlem) became a science historian and married Maria Klever. The son Job Cohen (born October 18, 1947 in Haarlem) became mayor of Amsterdam and married Alida Christina (Lidie) Lodeweges on June 2, 1972 (born March 16, 1948 in Deventer; † August 4, 2015 in Amsterdam).
