Johann Thomas Richter

Johann Thomas Richter (* 1728 ; † December 4, 1773 in Leipzig ) was an Electoral Saxon chamber councilor , art and antiquity collector.

Life

He was one of the sons of the financially strong Leipzig merchant and merchant Johann Zacharias Richter and entered the service of the Elector of Saxony as chamberlain. His father had built up a large art collection in the Bose House in Leipzig, which he had acquired in 1745 , which when he died comprised around 400 paintings, including works by Rubens , Rembrandt and Titian , over 1,000 hand drawings and several thousand copperplate engravings . After 1764, Johann Thomas Richter made his father's collection accessible to the public and enlarged it. Since Richter had no children, his property, including the collection, fell to his younger brother Johann Friedrich Richter in 1773 , who initially arranged for the graphics to be auctioned. In 1810 all the paintings were sold.

Richter and his younger brother owned the two manors Gotha and Kossen in the Eilenburg office .

His older brother, who had entered military service, was promoted to the rank of baron by the Elector of Saxony on December 11, 1777. His sister-in-law Susanne Elisabeth Richter b. In 1806, Richter acted as benefactress of the city of Leipzig in his will.
