Fernando José de Portugal e Castro Marques de Aguiar (* 4. December 1752 in Lisbon ; † 24. January 1817 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Portuguese- Brazilian politicians , among others, from 1808 to 1817 the first First Minister of the Kingdom of Brazil was . Before that he was the penultimate viceroy of Brazil between 1801 and 1806 .

Life

Fernando José de Portugal e Castro, son of José Miguel de Portugal e Castro, 3rd Marquês de Valença , became governor of Bahia on April 18, 1788 and remained in this position until September 23, 1801. October 1801 successor to José Luís de Castro Viceroy of Brazil (Vice-rei do Brasil) and held this office until October 14, 1806, after which Marcos de Noronha e Brito succeeded him. During this time he was also governor of Rio de Janeiro .

After the Kingdom of Brazil was established in 1808 , Fernando José de Portugal e Castro became First Minister (Secretário de Estado dos Negócios do Reino) on March 10, 1808 and held this post until his death on January 24, 1817, after which António de Araújo e Azevedo became his successor. During his tenure, between 1808 and 1812, he also served as Minister of Finance (Ministro da Fazenda) and was elevated to the nobility on December 17, 1808 by Queen Maria I of Portugal as Conde de Aguiar . In December 1813 he was also raised to Marquês de Aguiar and from 1814 to 1816 also held the offices of Foreign Minister (Ministro das Relações Exteriores) and Minister of War (Secretaria de Estado dos Negócios da Guerra) .
