Frank Tiberi

Frank Tiberi (born December 4, 1928 in Camden , New Jersey ) is an American jazz musician , band leader and university teacher.

Life

Tiberi learned to play the clarinet at the age of eight and began performing professionally at the age of 13. He later studied bassoon with Sol Schoenbach of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra , and he also learned to play the flute and saxophone himself .

From 1948 to 1949 he was part of Bob Chester's Big Band, from 1954 to 1955 he was part of the Benny Goodman Quartet, and toured with Benny Goodman, Urbie Green and Dizzy Gillespie . In the 1960s he was mostly active as a studio musician before joining the Woody Herman Thundering Herd Jazz Band in 1969 . There he worked as a soloist, arranger and musical director and took over the band after Hermann's death in 1987. He also teaches improvisation as an associate professor at the Berklee College of Music .

In addition to the recordings with the Herman Band and from 1987 with his own BigBand, which emerged from the Herman Band, his album Tiberian Mode (1999) should be mentioned in particular , which he made with Joe Lovano and George Garzone , Andy LaVerne , James Williams , Ray Drummond and Adam Walnut took up.
