Nadir Afonso (born December 4, 1920 in Chaves , † December 11, 2013 in Cascais ) was a Portuguese painter . Originally an architect, he worked with Le Corbusier and Oscar Niemeyer . He later studied painting in Paris and became a pioneer in kinetic art .

He published his theoretical work on geometrically based aesthetics in several books. Afonso proceeded from the thesis that art is purely objective and determined by laws which it treats not as an act of fantasy, but as one of observation, perception and change of form.

His work can be found in numerous museums around the world, including his best-known work, the series Cities , in which he depicts places from all over the world.
