Adam Hanuszkiewicz
Adam Hanuszkiewicz (born June 16, 1924 in Lemberg , Poland , today Ukraine , † December 4, 2011 in Warsaw ) was a Polish actor and theater director .
Career
Initially, Hanuszkiewicz was a theater actor from 1945, but without having attended drama school. In 1946 he passed an external acting examination before Leon Schiller and from 1946 to 1949 he was a member of the ensemble in the theater of Juliusz Osterwa in Krakow . He made his directorial debut in Poznan in 1951 .
From 1955 he worked as a director and actor in Warsaw. In the 1960s he was director of Teatr Powszechny, then from 1968 to 1982 director of the Polish national theater Teatr Narodowy . He took over the theater after the student unrest in 1968 and the dismissal of the previous director Kazimierz Dejmek . During this time his most important and most discussed productions were created and he became the protagonist of modern Polish directorial theater. Hanuszkiewicz's reinterpretations of the Polish classics from Balladyna by Juliusz Słowacki to his dramatization of Pan Tadeusz by Adam Mickiewicz are legendary to this day, but also led to his reputation as the enfant terrible of Polish theater.
From 1989 to 2007 Adam Hanuszkiewicz was director of the Warsaw Teatr Nowy. Successor as director of the theater was Krzysztof Warlikowski .
Adam Hanuszkiewicz was married four times and has received numerous national and international awards for his work over the course of his career. On July 25, 2001, he received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class. He was fluent in Russian , German , English and French .
