Aleksander Fredro (born June 20, 1793 in Surochów near Jarosław , † July 15, 1876 in Lemberg ) was a Polish playwright and is considered one of the most important comedy authors in his country.

Life

Aleksander Fredro was born in the family of a Polish nobleman and therefore carried the title Count . In the Napoleonic Wars , Fredro served in the French army. At the same time he was involved in the Polish resistance against Galicia belonging to the Habsburg monarchy .

He wrote humorous comedies in which political punchlines are often hidden, and his characters reveal the many characteristics of the Poles . However, the plays only achieved great popularity after his death; they have so far not been missing from any program in Polish theaters. Experts compare the type of presentation with the well-known French comedy poet Molière . He also wrote numerous poems and fairy tales.

The Zemsta ( Eng .: Revenge ) is considered to be Fredro's best comedy and a masterpiece of Polish literature . For Fredro's 220th birthday, the comedy was performed simultaneously in two Warsaw theaters in the spring of 2013.
