Marenq dolmen
The Dolmen of Marenq (also called Dolmen de la Colle or Dolmen du Ratons) is located on a small plateau north of Ampus in the Var department in Provence in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).
Discovered by A. Aicard in 1922, the dolmen was used as a shelter by hunters. In 1925 it was examined by L. Laflotte, but the result of the excavation was not known. The dolmen was restored by Hélène Barge-Mahieu in 1990.
It is one of the few dolmens built from local limestone in Provence that has retained its capstone. A short corridor (1.5 × 1.0 m) leads to two orthostats , which provide access to the rectangular chamber of around 2.0 × 1.5 m, which is bordered by the remains of a dry stone wall. A vertical plate forms the end of the chamber and the rear support of the capstone. About half of the limestone hill is preserved.
