history

Many ancient finds have been made in Ménerbes, including the remains of a pottery workshop (late 1st century), the Sylvanus altarpiece (late 2nd or 3rd century), a tombstone (late 1st century) and some Roman villas. Saint Castor of Apt played an important role in the history of the municipality. The Manancha Monastery, which he founded in an unknown location, may have been in what is now Ménerbes. He also hid in a cave in the Luberon , possibly near Ménerbes, from the clergy and residents of Apt who wanted to consecrate him around the year 410 .

In the Middle Ages, the city was accessible through the two gates Saint-Sauveur and Notre-Dame and was dominated by a fortress from the 13th century. In the middle of the 13th century the Carmelites founded a monastery. In 1274 Ménerbes was incorporated into the Comtat Venaissin . During the Wars of Religion , Ménerbes was a stronghold of Protestantism and occupied by Huguenots from 1573 to 1578. After the French Revolution - until 1801 - Ménerbes was chief lieu of a canton.

In the 1990s, the place became widely known through the English writer Peter Mayle ( My Year in Provence and Toujours Provence ), who described the place and life in Provence so lovingly and authentically in his novels that many tourists went in search of clues and identified his house, among other things, which prompted him to give up his place of residence.
